Shanghai United Family Hospital (SHU) Surgeon Fixes New and Old Hernia at Same Time

Recently SHU received personal story from our patient, Tim Dyson (whose name we’ve changed here for privacy).

Why did he choose Shanghai United Family Hospital

Being a veteran expat in China, fluent in Chinese, Tim could easily have sought care from any Chinese doctor, and managed the experience at any hospital in the country. Instead, he chose Shanghai United Family Hospital (SHU), the place where he has felt the safest and most comfortable outside of his home country, since his first visit in 2008. Living for the past 15 years in Shanghai, Mr. Dyson first came to China way back in 1990 when travelling to factories throughout Asia.

Tim said:“I think SHU is probably the best hospital in Shanghai, both back then and today,” he said.

So, what is an inguinal hernia?

An inguinal hernia is a protrusion of the abdominal-cavity contents through the inguinal canal. Often, a visible bulging occurs. If not operated on, the main concern is that the blood supply in the intestines that are protruding through can become strangled, causing a life-threatening situation.

Why choose Dr. Zhang

“Dr. Zhang set me completely at ease in that first consultation,” said Tim. “He’s a very nice guy, very confident, and clearly has a lot of experience fixing things in that part of the body,” he said. “I realized there are many other great foreign and Chinese surgeons at SHU, but Dr. Zhang Zhuo is the head of surgery, specializes in this, and made me feel very reassured, so I went with him,” Tim added.

How did Dr. Zhang fix both new and old hernias at same time

Tim told Dr. Zhang that he had actually had hernia surgery once before, but that it happened decades ago when Tim was only 5 years old. The surgery had been performed on the other side of the groin from the current hernia.

Recovering, Tim found out from Dr. Zhang Zhuo that not only had the surgeon successfully treated Tim’s current hernia, but also while operating, Dr. Zhang had fully reworked and repaired the old hernia from when Tim was five.

“Also, in those days, they would put the restraining mesh on the outside of the abominable muscle. But now the standard procedures are all different and they put everything on the inside of the muscle. So Dr. Zhang completely upgraded all that, and I am much safer and better off now,” he said.

As a medical facility that offers comprehensive diagnostics, high quality surgery rooms and rehabilitation, Shanghai United Family ensures a superior quality of medical care and higher convenience for all people. We are here to congratulate Tim Dyson, for returning to his normal life and becoming a new dad, we wish him all the health and happiness in future.
