Something You Need to Know about Bariatric Surgery

Jun WANG, Surgeon

After growing increasingly popular in the West overthe past decade, bariatric surgery, also known as weight-loss surgery,is now available at Shanghai United Family Hospital (SHU). For people suffering from severe obesity, these minimally-invasive surgical techniques can help them lose weight.
Our General Surgery team has already helped several people who have desired to lose weight. With our team’s help, one of our patients successfully lost about 15 kilograms in just one month postoperation.

Candidates for  Bariatric surgery
Candidates for bariatric surgery include westerners with a BMI > 35-40kg/m2 and Asians with a BMI > 27.5-32.5kg/m2.  For these people, the procedure can help reduce up to 60-70% of excess weight.

What is Bariatric Surgery?
The surgery works by reducing the volume of the stomach, resulting in the patient eating less without feeling hungry. There are several different ways to decrease the size of the stomach, and a surgeon will assist the patient in choosing the most appropriate procedure based on individual needs. Stomach reduction procedures can be either temporary or permanent. For those with severe obesity, a morecomprehensive operation to re-channel the gastrointestinal tract and reduce the absorption of foods may be required. Most of the procedures require a keyholeoperation under general anesthesia, and a 2to5 day hospital stay.

Shanghai United Family General Surgery team can provide a comprehensive assessment and service to you. If there is any need, please feel free to contact us.
