What is Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD)?

Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) is a common disease in infants and children. It is characterized by fever and mouth ulcers. The initial symptoms of  fever, loss of appetite, and discomfort are often accompanied by a sore throat. After 1-2 days of fever, oral ulcers emerge. Oral herpes is common on the tongue, gums, and oral mucosa. 1-2 days later a non-itching rash can appear on the skin, commonly on the palm of the hand and foot, but can also be found on the buttocks.

What is the role of the HFMD EV71 vaccine?

The EV71 vaccine is used to prevent HFMD caused by EV71 infection. There are a variety of viruses that can cause HFMD but the Cox and EV71 viruses are the most common cause. At present, SHU’s EV71 vaccine can prevent HFMD caused by the EV71 virus.
