Unique Services for Bad Hips Offered at Shanghai United Family Healthcare

Recently, a total hip replacement Surgery was successfully performed by the Orthopedic & Sports Medicine team of Shanghai United Family Hospital and Clinics (PXU) to treat the left hip pain and end-stage osteoarthritis of a foreign patient. This surgery is the first time PXU has provided this kind of service. The entire treatment process was very smooth, and the patient was be able to get out of bed on the second day after surgery and was discharged from hospital in less than one week.

Rapid postoperative rehabilitation process

Our total hip replacement surgery patient has been living in Shanghai for many years. Because of advanced osteoarthritis, the patient suffered from symptoms in the left hip such as pain, stiffness, and an inability to walk, all culminating in a much-needed hip replacement surgery. In the past, hip replacement was regarded as a major surgery. Patients would need to stay in bed for least 10 days after the operation, and rehabilitation was a long-term process. Hip replacement causes not only challenges in nursing, but also increases the risks of conditions like deep vein thrombosis or lung infection. For this surgery, however, treatment and rehabilitation for the patient was customized by PXU’s medical team and so had many benefits over traditional treatment as a fusion of Western concepts and developments in modern medicine.

A treatment approach that is breaking traditional treatment barriers

1.Excellent pre-operative preparation

The physicians and nursing team had excellent communication with the patient, and discussed the post-operative pain management plan, functional exercise, complication prevention measures, and more.

2.State-of-the-art medical technology

With the help of our specialists, advanced technology, and the support of the OR nursing team, the operation process was very smooth.

3.Professional post-operative rehabilitation treatment

Professional bedside rehabilitation treatment, assessment, and guidance were all provided for the patient by PXU’s physical therapy team the day after surgery, which was helpful to start building a rehabilitation foundation and help the patient do off-bed activity on the second day after surgery.

With excellent pre-operative preparation, caring and professional nursing care, on-time physical therapy, and multidisciplinary cooperation, PXU has promoted this patient’s smooth recovery and provided him with a great healthcare experience, all embodied by our characteristic continuity of care. This made it possible for the patient to be discharged from our hospital on the fourth day after the total hip replacement surgery. Compared to more traditional healthcare approaches, hospitalization and rehabilitation times were greatly reduced. We learned from subsequent telephone outpatient follow-up that the patient has recovered well and the quality of his life has been much improved.
